La Traversa*

World Premiere at the company's SF home season May 9th and 10th, 2003 at the Cowell Theater, Fort Mason Center, 8 PM

"Stop signs and stop lights are merely a suggestion," Cadagon Guide to Sicily.

La Traversa opened Nancy Karp + Dancers' 24th Anniversary Season at the Cowell Theater, at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. A world premiere influenced by the vibrant culture and rich traditions of Sicily, La Traversa will be performed to a live commissioned music score by award-winning composer Alvin Curran.

In its broadest scope, La Traversa sets the stage for a merging of the old and new. A traditional procession crosses an intersection and bodies in motion confront the ever-changing rules and regulations of modern life. The dance portrays the challenges and quandaries of our unique era, when the pull of tradition both contradicts and compliments the force of the new. Karp's uniquely postmodern perspective embraces the contrapuntal modes of rituals, customs, habits, and innovation.
