Il Mercato*
Premiere performances in San Francisco: September 20-22, 2001
New York premiere: March 1-3, 2002 at the Joyce SoHo
In Il Mercato, Nancy Karp ventures beyond her minimalist movement vocabulary to create elaborate choreographic structures that evoke the chaos and energy of the marketplace. The core movement for this work is derived from market and street gesture. Featuring dancers Michael Armstrong, Manuelito Biag, Diane McKallip, Erin Mei-Ling Stuart, Manfred Schaechtle, and Jane Schnorrenberg, the work juxtaposes radically diverse elements that exist side by side in the marketplace. Il Mercato is a collage of intense choreographic activity.
The choreography for six dancers is intertwined with the music of composer Charles Amirkhanian. His work combines a lightness and humor with seriousness and intensity. He is a master of colorful rhythmic audio montage.
